The challenge
A regulated payments business ran its core systems on VMware with ageing Windows and SQL Server versions, and wanted some web workloads in Azure without disturbing what stayed on premises.
What we did
- Took over monitoring, lifecycle patching, capacity planning and troubleshooting for the ESXi hosts, vCenter and VMware Cloud Foundation.
- Upgraded on-premises SQL Server to 2017 and moved databases onto a newly built SQL cluster in stages.
- Moved designated web applications to Azure as SaaS and PaaS, and Linux and Windows servers to Azure IaaS.
- Ran Windows Server upgrades, patch management and third and fourth line support alongside the projects.
Outcome
What changed
- VMware and VCF kept on supported, patched releases
- SQL estate consolidated on one cluster
- Chosen workloads running in Azure
- One technical lead across on-premises and cloud
